For our February topic we would like to focus on growth vs. fixed mindset.
Sometimes during the winter months we can feel stuck and overwhelmed with all that is going on around us. We all hold beliefs around our own abilities and potential which is often shaped by our experiences. These beliefs become part of our mindset, and our mindset can be very powerful when it comes to overcoming challenges.
Growth mindset is a research-based mental-framing process, studied for decades by Carol Dweck at Stanford, that can help you shift your perspective when you face challenging circumstances or struggle to succeed. This involves a willingness to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. A fixed mindset is often focused on a belief that your intelligence and abilities cannot be altered in a significant way. When stuck in a fixed mindset, we fear new experiences, avoid taking risks and feel the need to constantly prove ourselves to others. On the contrary, a growth mindset has been securely linked to greater levels of achievement and happiness in life. You may want to ask your child: where do they see themselves? Do they believe they have a growth or fixed mindset?
