Greetings from HMS! As you may have noticed, we are using a new format for our bi-monthly HMS Updates. If you have any feedback, please let us know! We hope this update finds you well as we start a new month together. We have successfully made it through the darkest 10 weeks of the year, and the days will just keep getting longer! Our next HMS Update will be sent on February 16, 2024. We encourage you to please reach out with any questions you may have. As always, thank you for your partnership. With Gratitude, Mandy Lewis and Tom McDowell HMS Administrative Team

For our February topic we would like to focus on growth vs. fixed mindset.

Sometimes during the winter months we can feel stuck and overwhelmed with all that is going on around us. We all hold beliefs around our own abilities and potential which is often shaped by our experiences. These beliefs become part of our mindset, and our mindset can be very powerful when it comes to overcoming challenges.

Growth mindset is a research-based mental-framing process, studied for decades by Carol Dweck at Stanford, that can help you shift your perspective when you face challenging circumstances or struggle to succeed. This involves a willingness to view challenges as opportunities for growth and learning. A fixed mindset is often focused on a belief that your intelligence and abilities cannot be altered in a significant way. When stuck in a fixed mindset, we fear new experiences, avoid taking risks and feel the need to constantly prove ourselves to others. On the contrary, a growth mindset has been securely linked to greater levels of achievement and happiness in life. Click on the link below for a visual to explain more on both growth and fixed mindset. https://www.mindsetworks.com/science/Impact

You may want to ask your child: where do they see themselves? Do they believe they have a growth or fixed mindset?

We hope you take a few minutes to watch the TED Talk and/or engage in whatever learning or challenges you feel would be helpful!
