HMS Update

#13: February 7, 2025

Dear HMS parents, guardians, and caregivers,

We find ourselves at the end of a rather snow-filled week with more snow headed our way this weekend. We wanted to share a quick reminder that students go outside multiple times a day, and our temperature threshold is 5 degrees. Please encourage your student to wear or bring items to school that will help keep them warm while enjoying the fresh air! As we approach another vacation, now is a helpful time for students to check our Lost and Found for any items that may belong to them before we donate the unclaimed items during February break.

Our next HMS Update will be shared on February 28, 2025. Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Be in touch with any questions or concerns.

With Gratitude,

Mandy Lewis and Tom McDowell

Counselors' Corner

Hello and happy February!

For this month, the counseling team wanted to share a resource: Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions, or SPACE. SPACE was developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz, PhD at the Yale Child Study Center. This framework supports parents and caregivers in building their skills to effectively support children with anxiety and/or emotionally-based school avoidance. As we know, when children miss school regularly, the impacts can be long-lasting, e.g delaying necessary social skills and academic success. A national survey recently revealed that students with an attendance rate of 95% or higher are more likely to experience academic success, while those with lower attendance rates are at a higher risk of falling behind.

SPACE views parents and caregivers as the biggest resource in helping children overcome distress and relies on two basic principles: supportive responses and challenging accommodations. Supportive responses make children feel heard and loved, while using intentional statements to build their confidence. Parents can show their child that they understand how terrible it is to feel anxious, and that they can tolerate the feeling. In this, children learn they possess the strength to face their fears.

Accommodating anxiety may alleviate stress in the short term, but it can actually make it much worse in the long-term. That's because the child is always relying on others for rescue or escape, so kids never learn to deal with stressful situations on their own and never learn they have the ability to cope with those moments. "When you provide a lot of accommodation, the unspoken message is, 'You can't do this, so I'm going to help you,'" Dr. Eli says. SPACE helps parents change that message and encourage children to face anxieties rather than flee from them. It's helping the child find their own way of coping and ride whatever wave of anxiety they're experiencing. This ultimately decreases anxiety and builds self-confidence.

HMS Dental Clinic (reminder)

In partnership with Mainely Teeth we will be offering dental clinics at HMS on February 12th. This is a convenient option for families. These services are open to all students regardless of insurance. MaineCare and private insurance will be billed directly by the provider, and the costs for services for students who don't have dental insurance are covered by the state. There are no payments expected from families for School Oral Health Program services.

Please read the flyer carefully. Then complete the permission form if you would like your child(ren) to participate. You may scan the form and email it to Kristina True, send a hard copy in with your student, or deliver a hard copy to school yourself. (If you send it in with your student, please email to let me know so that I can be sure to get it!) Kristina_True@yarmouthschools.org

THANK YOU FOR A SUCCESSFUL GLOW RUN!

As we wrap up our fundraiser, we are thrilled to share some exciting news with you all! Thanks to your incredible support and generosity, we have not only met but exceeded our fundraising goal of $20,000! Thanks to everyone who donated, registered their student(s), volunteered their time, and supported our fundraiser.

Here are some key highlights and updates:

1. Fundraiser Total: Together, we have raised a total of $38,000!

2. Impact: Your donations will go directly toward classroom enrichment, field trips, teacher appreciation, and special events, enriching the educational experience for all students at Frank H. Harrison Middle School.

3. THANK YOU: We extend a BIG thank you to our volunteers, HMS staff and YES 5th grade staff, and school families who played a crucial role in making this fundraiser a resounding success. Your dedication to our school community is deeply appreciated! Special thanks to our t-shirt sponsors: Romeo's Pizza, Nighthawk's Kitchen, 207 Pediatric Dentistry, Maiden Cove, Island Treasure Toys, Make Me Smile, Attic and Eaves, Sea to You Designs, Pat's Pizza, and Clayton's.

Once again, thank you for your unwavering support, whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word. Your involvement has made a tremendous difference and showcases the strength of our school community!

SUMMER CAMP SIGN-UPS: As you look ahead to summer plans, we have some information on Yarmouth-area camps that should help! This camp packet is brought to you by the Yarmouth PreK-8 PTO in an effort to familiarize families with local camp information.

Please contact Becca Maltais at rebeccamaltais@yahoo.com with any questions or if you have additional camp information.

NEW FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE: Are you looking to lend your fundraising expertise and/or enthusiasm to the PTO? If so, please reach out to Allison at yarmouthpto04096@gmail.com. This new committee will focus on annual strategy and generating new ideas to increase our budget. The more we bring in, the more we can do for our school communities, as every dollar raised goes directly to funding enrichment activities and other school needs not covered by the school district's budget. We hope to hear from you!

NEXT PTO MEETING: Our next meeting is Thursday, February 13th at 7 pm in the YES library. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. We hope to see you there!

YCS

NEW YCS Summer Camp

This summer, sign your young teen/pre-teen up to Get Out and GO! YCS has added a middle school day trip camp to the summer program list! Available for rising 6th-8th graders, Get Out and Go! – Middle School Day Trip Camp will run M-Th, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM for the month of July (6/30-7/31). Each day your middle schooler will meet at HMS and embark on a different adventure – lakes, beaches, hiking, adventure/amusement parks, etc! Research shows middle schoolers still need adequate adult supervision and what better way to get them out and off their screens then spending the day adventuring with their friends! You can find more info at yarmouthcommunityservices.com under Summer Camps, or scan the QR code below! We hope to see you there!
