HMS Update

#3: September 12, 2025

Dear HMS parents, guardians, and caregivers, Here’s to a fantastic start, and we hope the momentum will continue through many more weeks ahead! Students have settled into the new routines and have already engaged in a variety of learning opportunities. In our schedule this year, we have an extended advisor each Wednesday from 8-8:20am, and we are exploring guiding questions with each grade level: 6th Grade: Who am I in this community? 7th Grade: How do we build and support a positive school community? 8th Grade: How can we give back to our school community? It has been exciting to see the ways that students and advisors are exploring these questions already. Our next HMS Update will be shared on September 26. Please be in touch with any questions. Thank you for your partnership! With Gratitude, Mandy Lewis and Tom McDowell HMS Administrative Team

HMS Open House: a few more details!

The HMS Open House will take place on Wednesday, September 17 from 6-7:30pm, and it is a night designed for parents and guardians only.  We will use the following schedule for different grade levels during our Open House. Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit their children’s classroom during the time specified:

  • 6:00-6:30 - 6th grade parents and guardians are with their subteam teachers

  • 6:30-7:00 - 7th grade parents and guardians are with their subteam teachers

  • 7:00-7:30 - 8th grade parents and guardians are with their subteam teachers (join us earlier than 7:00pm to visit Unified Arts classrooms)

Upon arrival, parents and guardians will receive a list of their student's teachers to visit during their time at HMS. Come in the Main Entrance in order to receive that information.

We will need your help in making the evening a success!  Parking will be limited.  We encourage you to walk, bike, or carpool, if possible.  We also encourage you to allow ample time to arrive.  Parking will be available in the HMS parking lot, at the Yarmouth Elementary School and Central Office, along one side of McCartney Street, and along one side of Hillside Street.  We are working with the Yarmouth Police Department to help direct traffic and ensure we all have a safe Open House event.

Yardsticks: a resource for educators and families

HMS educators have used Yardsticks as a way to better understand expected behaviors and social-emotional skills of our students. We are taking this opportunity to share a snapshot with you as well. The PDF linked here shares helpful information about our students as they grow during their middle-level years. Thank you for being a part of this journey!
