Yarmouth Schools Update

Autumn Rolls Along

Food assistance available as federal programs are halted

With the shutdown of the federal government, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has notified states that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will not be issued for November. This does not affect school meals as Child Nutrition Programs and SNAP are administered separately; school meal operations will not be affected by changes to federal SNAP benefits.

Families in need may access support through a variety of resources, several of which are identified in the flier, below. You may click on the flier in order to access the individual links.

The search is on for a new superintendent

The Yarmouth School Committee has begun the search process for our next superintendent of schools. School Committee Chairperson Christina Patrick sent a letter to all staff and families earlier this month, seeking volunteers to serve on the search team, which will be composed of four members of the School Committee, three members of the administrative team, 3 staff members, and 2 parents/community members.

The School Committee has issued a request for proposals from search teams/consultants who are eager to assist in the search process, with a goal of engaging the selected firm by December 11.

A webpage has been created to keep you apprised of the School Committee's progress, and opportunities for input will be provided and announced through school newsletters and direct emails to all families and staff.

Prediction: Inclement Weather is Coming

We're going to go out on a limb and forecast that there will be snow and ice and freezing rain in Maine this winter. When that happens, the superintendent will make an early-morning decision about school for the day.

This year, the academic calendar will allow for FOUR traditional "snow days" before we consider using remote learning days. If we use all four days, the school year will end on Thursday, June 18.

If we face inclement weather after using four traditional snow days, we will attempt to use remote learning days to avoid having to hold school the week of June 22-26.

PTO and YEF provide opportunities for engagement

Yarmouth Schools enjoy tremendous support from the community in a variety of forms. Two very active groups that provide financial and volunteer support are the Pre-K - 8 Parent Teacher Organization and the Yarmouth Education Foundation.

If you are looking for a way to support our schools, check out the websites linked above.

If you're new to Yarmouth, the PTO has created a local Welcome Packet that has lots of useful information to help you and your child become acclimated to the community.

We are fortunate to have both the YEF and PTO supporting our schools. Thank you to all who are involved in these great organizations!

Project Holiday and Thanksgiving Meal support

The Project Holiday Committee is preparing for their annual event, and we are excited to share the 2025 application form for Yarmouth families in need of assistance. Please find the form linked HERE. Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, November 5. All completed forms should be dropped off at Yarmouth Community Services or at any of our schools.

Families seeking assistance with the Thanksgiving meal this year may complete the request form linked here. Note that the deadline is Friday, November 14. Completed forms can either be returned to school counselors or scanned and emailed to Diane McCormick at dianemc5@outlook.com. With questions, email Diane or contact the Yarmouth Food Pantry at 207-844-3320.
