YHS students sweep the Titan Challenge

Each year, Junior Achievement of Maine sponsors the Titan Challenge, a business strategy competition for high school students. Each participating school sends teams of three students each to create their own virtual company and guide it through the ups and downs of the market, competing with other "firms" to produce the best results.

This year, more than 350 students representing 29 Maine high schools competed in the Challenge, with two teams from YHS claiming the top spots in the Statewide Competition and a third YHS team claiming the third spot in the region.

Congratulations to David Pearl, YHS's Titan Challenge instructor, and the following three teams, each pictured with their advisors from Tyler Technology:

YSD Drivers sweep the MAPT Skills Competition

During school vacation week, while many of us were enjoying a few days away, the Maine Association of Pupil Transportation held its annual Safety Week. Several of our Drivers attended the MAPT Regional Safety Training, taking classes on School Bus Safety and participating in skills competitions.

We are pleased to report that drivers from Yarmouth took home the three top spots in the competition, with Brenda Anderson finishing in first place. Terry Buck finished second, and Kiersten Carlson brought home the bronze.

Congratulations to Brenda, Terry, and Kiersten - and thank you to all of our drivers who spent time honing their skills over the vacation week!

YHS Senior is PATHS Student of the Year

Eddie Kim and his parents

Eddie Kim, a YHS student in the Masonry Program, has been selected as the Portland Arts and Technology (PATHS) Student of the Year. This award is sponsored by the Maine Association of Career and Technical Education (MACTE), recognizing an outstanding student at each CTE center in Maine, and we are thrilled to share that Eddie is bringing the award home to Yarmouth.

In their announcement of the award, PATHS leadership wrote: "Eddie is a high-character student with outstanding attendance who exemplifies the best traits of a CTE student: commitment to learning, working hard, and being a leader in his program. We are proud to have him as our student of the year. Eddie is pictured here with his parents, Dubek and Sarah.

Budget season nearing its end

We encourage all citizens to become engaged in the School Budget Approval Process. While this process has been ongoing for several months, there are a few critical times when voter input is required, and we invite any and all Yarmouth residents to participate.

TUESDAY, JUNE 4: Yarmouth's Town Meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the YPAC at Yarmouth High School. At this meeting, residents will have the opportunity to vote on each article of the school and town budget and approve a bottom line to be considered at a referendum the following week.

TUESDAY, JUNE 11: Voting will take place in the Yarmouth High School Gymnasium from 6:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballot regarding the school budget, as well as for candidates running for Town Council and School Committee.

For more information on the proposed budget, please go to the Finance section of our website.

PLEASE VOTE!

YHS musicians shine in regional festivals

Congratulations to the YHS Jazz Ensemble and YHS Jazz "Clipper Combo" for their performances this month at the All-State Jazz Festival and UNH Clark Terry Jazz Fest!

The biggest news comes from the UNH Festival, where YHS was one of 2 schools in Class B to be recognized for Outstanding Performance.

YHS's Rhythm Section received the award for Best Rhythm Section (David Dealaman, Ryan Kew, Coltrane Vitalius, Liam Hannah, Sam Thompson) out of 30 schools.

The YHS Jazz Combo received ratings of 92 and 93 at State for a Silver Medal Performance.  David Dealaman was recognized for outstanding musicianship, and Liam Hannah, Tristan Hardel, Oz Stewart, and Finn Marianski were all recognized for their solo improvisation performances.

Erica Troy named

Educator of the Year

Each year, the Yarmouth Education Association selects one of our many outstanding educators to be recognized as Yarmouth's Educator of the Year. This year, that prestigious award has been presented to Mrs. Erica Troy, Music Educator at Yarmouth Elementary School.

Mrs. Troy has spent her entire 23-year career teaching music here in Yarmouth - in three different schools. Her enthusiasm, knowledge, and professionalism are on display each day as she guides hundreds of YES students in the development of skills and appreciation for music.

Mrs. Troy is pictured here receiving word of her recognition from YES Assistant Principal, Molly Kilpatrick. She will be honored at the annual YEA Banquet in May.

Congratulations, Mrs. Troy!
