From the Principals

Dear YES Families,

As we find ourselves midway through the school year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the growth and achievements our students have made so far. Each day, we’re inspired by their curiosity, determination, and joyful learning. We couldn’t be more proud of the progress they’ve made, and we’re excited about all that’s still to come!

Here’s a little mid-year rhyme to celebrate:

Halfway through the school year’s race,

We’re learning and growing at a steady pace.

From classrooms to playgrounds, we give our best,

Together we’re striving to meet each quest!

We encourage you to celebrate this milestone with your children by asking them about their proudest moments, favorite lessons, or goals for the rest of the year. Your support plays a vital role in their success, and we are so grateful to partner with you on this journey.

Here’s to a fantastic second half of the year filled with new discoveries, memorable moments, and continued growth for all. As always, please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions, concerns, or feedback you would like to share.  We hope that your family has a nice winter break!

Best,

Ryan Gleason, YES Principal & Molly Kilpatrick, YES Assistant Principal

CONFERENCES, REPORT CARDS & MAP ASSESSMENTS: JANUARY- MARCH

Parent conferencing occurs just after the midway point of our school year. Classroom teachers are in the process of scheduling these meetings and holding conferences. They will be sharing with you how students are progressing and growing in regard to the YES learning standards that have been taught.

Also, as part of the report card the Unified Arts team has provided information on the learning experiences that students have had in each grade level for the first semester.

Just a reminder that the conferencing window for teachers runs from now through March. Your child's teacher will communicate with you directly about when they will hold these meetings. Report cards will be available to view in all grade levels on Tuesday, February 4th. You will have access to the report card through PowerSchool. These directions show you how to access your child's grades on the portal.

It is important to remember that our progress reports are reporting out on end of year grade level common core standards. It is not uncommon that many students are at a "beginning" or "developing" level in their progress toward these standards at this point in the school year. In many cases, we would not expect students to be at a "meets the standard" until the end of the school year. The report card is always an "invitation to a conversation" as the conference will share the work going on for your child in the classroom.

We are finishing testing this week and next for all grades taking the NWEA winter assessment. We will be sending out a separate email to let you know when those results are also available on PowerSchool and how to access them.

Once again, your collaboration and support are greatly appreciated!

VALENTINE'S DAY AT YES

We are celebrating Valentine’s Day at YES on Friday, February 14th. Students will make cards for one another here at school rather than bring them from home. Students will also engage in different activities to celebrate the day depending on the grade level.

At times, the emphasis on outside material items becomes a challenge here at school. For this reason we ask that items are not brought to school. Our focus is on a day that celebrates community, friendship, and gratitude for one another. We will take care of everything here!

SUMMER CAMP SIGN-UPS

As you look ahead to summer plans, we have some information on Yarmouth-area camps that should help! This camp packet is brought to you by the Yarmouth PreK-8 PTO in an effort to familiarize families with local camp information.

Please contact Becca Maltais at rebeccamaltais@yahoo.com with any questions or if you have additional camp information.

NEW FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE

Are you looking to lend your fundraising expertise and/or enthusiasm to the PTO? If so, please reach out to Allison at yarmouthpto04096@gmail.com. This new committee will focus on annual strategy and generating new ideas to increase our budget. The more we bring in, the more we can do for our school communities, as every dollar raised goes directly to funding enrichment activities and other school needs not covered by the school district's budget. We hope to hear from you!

NEXT PTO MEETING

Our next meeting is Thursday, February 13th at 7 pm in the YES library. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. We hope to see you there!

February 2025 Dates to Remember

National School Counseling Week Feb. 3-7, 2025

National School Counseling Week is celebrated annually to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. Sponsored by the American School Counselors Association, this week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February.

We are fortunate to have three dedicated school counseling and social work professionals at YES. Thank you to Laura Murray, Chelsea Beckett, and Lindsey Lokken for all the work they do to support our students' social-emotional needs!

Tuesday, February 4: Report Cards Available on PowerSchool

We will send an email reminder out that morning once they are posted and can be accessed.

Thursday, February 6: Fans in the Stands Unified Basketball Game at 2:50 pm in Gym

The YES Unified PE students will be taking on some YES staff members in basketball with our 5th graders filling the bleachers at our first "Fans in the Stands" game! Parents of the athletes participating and Civil Rights Team partners are welcome to attend.

Thursday, February 6: Family School Alliance at 6:00 pm in YES Cafeteria

Monday, February 10: Wacky Sock Day!

On this day we will celebrate the YES core values of caring and citizenship at a community meeting led by our second-grade teachers.  Students who wish to participate are asked to bring in one or more new pairs of socks. Socks will be collected that day. Everyone is also encouraged to wear wacky socks to school that day to show their school spirit. You can wear unique-looking socks, mismatched socks, socks pulled up over the outside of your pant legs, etc.

As we approach our 100th day of school, we'd like to see if we can collect 100 or more pairs of socks to donate to people in need. We are proud to share with you that all socks collected will be delivered to the Preble Street Shelter in Portland.

Tuesday, February 11: Grade 4 Band Sectionals Recital 6:00 pm

On February 11 there will be a sectional recital performed by our 4th grade band students. Students should be here by 5:45 pm. The recital will start at 6:00 pm in the gym and should finish by 6:30 pm. We are excited for their first performance of the year!

Thursday, February 13: YES Dental Clinic

In partnership with Mainely Teeth, we will be offering a dental clinic at YES on February 13, 2025, for all students who complete the attached sign-up paperwork in advance. Private insurance and Mainecare will be billed for the visit, and the costs for students who don’t have any insurance will be covered by the state of Maine.  Please note that this clinic is intended for students who are not currently under a dentist's care and most insurance companies will not pay for a dental visit if your student has already had a dental visit within the last 6 months.

Please read the attached permission form carefully and complete and return to school by February 3 if you would like your child to participate.  You can scan the form and email it to the school nurse or send a hard copy to the school with your student.  If you choose to send the form to school with your student, please email me to let me know so that I can be sure to get it.

Please reach out to me if you require a translated copy or a paper copy of the sign-up sheet.

Regards,

Maria D’Andrea RN, BSN YES School Nurse
