February 2026                     Unified Arts Spotlight:                  Music & Art

Music- Mrs. Troy

Over the last few months, YES musicians have continued to shine as performers, composers, and listeners. Across all grade levels, students have been building music literacy skills that help them become more independent musicians and communicate through music with others around the world.

Here are some highlights from the music room:

Second graders explored the characteristics of Native American music in November and took a musical journey through Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker in December. They are currently working with barred instruments and becoming increasingly confident reading more complex rhythms.

Third graders focused on meter, learning how strong and weak beats work together to create movement and flow in music. In January, they began reading notes on the staff, a skill that will remain a major focus for the rest of the year.

Fourth graders continue to strengthen fine motor skills, music reading, and self-control through recorder playing. They have also explored the concepts of unity and variety in music and how musical organization affects the listener’s brain. This learning will lead into a technology-based composition project using GarageBand in the coming weeks.

Fifth graders created original film scores to accompany the animated short Say Cheese. Working in groups, they planned and performed music that helped shape the emotional landscape of each scene. They are currently mastering complex eighth- and sixteenth-note rhythms and exploring how layers of sound create intensity and interest in music.

The YES music room continues to be a place where growth, teamwork, and creativity go hand in hand. Students are taking pride in their effort, recognizing their own progress, and supporting one another as musicians. Most importantly, your children have been focused learners, kind and caring friends, and responsible members of our musical community. Thank you for sharing them with me!

Art- Ms. Shoukimas

2nd grade artists spent early winter exploring painting techniques. We explored the work of Alma Woodsy Thomas with watercolor and later created paintings that explored color mixing. We have now moved on to collaborating with our peers on larger artworks that interpret open ended themes.  These artists have done a wonderful job of following routines, taking care of our art studio, and trusting their creativity abilities.

Some questions to ask your 2nd grade artist:

What was unique about Alma Woodsy Thomas’ painting style?

What can be tricky about collaborating with another artist?

How can I create the three Secondary colors using the primary colors? How do I create tints of those colors?

3rd grade artists have been BUSY this winter. They have worked as interior designers, creating small 3D versions of a dream room, filling them with miniature furniture, art and accessories. Switching gears, artists learned about the history and culture of zine making and created their own zines on topics that interested them. Artists then explored animation through a flipbook unit, creating both digital as well as paper flipbooks. This month, artists worked with clay to sculpt pinch pot creatures and practiced hand building techniques.

Some questions to ask you're 3rd grade artist:

Can you show me how to make a zine from a sheet of paper?

What is the trick to creating a successful flipbook animation?

What technique must you use when attaching two pieces of clay together?

4th and 5th grade artists spent several art classes this winter getting familiar with stop motion animation. Artists were able to explore a variety of approaches, from claymation to animating lego figures, stuffed animals, and even other people! It was an incredibly exciting unit! We have now moved on to working with oil pastels and using our new skills to create oil pastel owl drawings that will be used for our PTO art fundraiser this year. Artists are using this lesson to practice the importance of seeking and giving feedback in art.

Questions to ask your 4th or 5th grade artist:

Tell me about some of the stop motion films you created.

How can you use oil pastels to create texture in your drawing?

What do you focus on when giving feedback in art?

Friday, Feburary 6th: Super Bowl Day at YES

With our own New England Patriots back in the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 8th this coming Friday will be "Super Bowl Day" at YES! Patriots fans can wear their team gear or red, white and blue to cheer on the team. If someone is not a Pats fan they can wear their favorite team gear, or if they are not a sports fan wear their favorite thing that they think is "super" (band, cartoon, place, etc.)!

Correction: Report Cards March 2

The incorrect week of mid-year report cards availability was listed in the newsletter. The correct week that report cards will be made available on PowerSchool is the week of March 2nd.
