From the Principals

Dear YES Families,

It has been wonderful to see our students back in action this past week! We loved seeing so many kids riding their bicycles to school and getting outside to enjoy the beautiful spring weather — a sure sign that a new season is here.

It’s hard to believe, but we are already heading into the final stretch of the school year, with just seven weeks to go. We have so many exciting learning opportunities, celebrations, and activities ahead, and we can’t wait to experience them with your children.

As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or if there’s anything we can do to support your child’s success during these final weeks at YES.

Best,

Ryan Gleason, YES Principal & Molly Kilpatrick, YES Assistant Principal

May 2, School Cafeteria Workers "Hero Day"

Thank you to our kitchen staff for the amazing job that they do each and every day. Our YES "Lunch Ladies" play a very important role in the lives of our children. A shout-out to Kayti Anthony (Kitchen Manager), Cindy Davies, Kayla Ellenberger, and Kathy Gardner.

These staff members do a wonderful job making sure our students have nourishing meals that prepare them to learn. A smile and words of encouragement go a long way when kids go through the lunch line, and we appreciate all that they do. We will be celebrating them on May 2!

Kids Heart Challenge May 7- May 14

At YES, we will be celebrating our annual Kids Heart Challenge sponsored by the American Heart Association on May 7 through May 14. The purpose of this activity is to focus on heart health and to think of others who need support. Students will engage in a variety of fitness challenges and have the opportunity to dedicate their efforts by making an optional money donation to the American Heart Association. Donations can be given either by cash, check, or online.  All students will receive a small gift for participating. This year, SEL, music, and physical education classes are teaming up to provide a fun learning opportunity for our students!  Yarmouth AHA Page.

On a related PE note, we would like to give a huge thank you shout-out to our PTO for supporting the efforts to have Shea Gunther come and deliver three weeks of ultimate frisbee instruction to all of the students at YES!

Aside from the many physical benefits of playing ultimate, the game has inspirational practices as well. The students learned to manage the game from a place of integrity, honesty, and supportive team play in a short time. Coach Shea’s developmental approach and kid-friendly personality made everyone feel part of the action. It was certainly a highlight of the year!

A thank you to our amazing PE teacher, Ms. Pachuta, for her leadership and dedication in facilitating these meaningful experiences for all of our students.

May 5-9: Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week

We invite you to join us in celebrating Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week at YES!

Our teachers and staff pour their hearts into inspiring, motivating, and shaping the future of every student who walks through our doors. Their dedication reaches far beyond the walls of the classroom — it touches lives, builds dreams, and creates a lasting impact.

From May 5–9, we will be honoring these individuals who make YES such a special place. We encourage you to take a moment during the week to express your gratitude to the educators and staff who work with your child each day. Whether it's a handwritten note, a small gesture, or a simple "thank you," your words of appreciation can mean more than you know.

Our teachers and staff are the heart of our school, and we are deeply grateful for everything they do — each lesson taught, each encouragement given, each extra mile walked for their students. Thank you for helping us celebrate them!

Friday, May 23 Community Meeting ACES Day

On Friday, May 23, at 2:30 PM, Ms. Pachuta and Mrs. Ney will lead our entire student body and staff in an exciting ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) experience! This schoolwide event, which we participated in last year to great success, brings everyone together for fun and energizing movement activities. The ACES Day project is part of a national initiative to promote physical activity, healthy habits, and the importance of an active lifestyle for kids. It’s a joyful way to celebrate community, wellness, and the power of moving together!

YES Bike Train on May 14th

Dear YES Families,

May is National Bike Month! National Bike to Work Week is May 12th-18th, and right in the middle of that week, Wednesday, May 14th, is the YES Walk and Bike to School Day. This day is a great opportunity for those who might be thinking about walking or biking to school to try it out with support, while also celebrating the environmental and health benefits of walking and biking. Yarmouth's extensive network of sidewalks and paths provides safe routes for people of all ages to walk or bike.

On that day, we will be having our Eighth Annual Bike Train to YES.  What is a Bike Train?  A Bike Train is a group of students and adults all riding to YES together from a few meeting spots around Yarmouth.  We aren't able to meet everywhere in Yarmouth, so if your child would like to join us, please find the most convenient meeting spot, then click on your spot to see what time we will be there. We would love to have you join us as an adult volunteer.

Please make sure all riders come wearing helmets for safety! (This includes adults.)

We will not be riding home together. Please make your own plans for after school. Hope to see you there!

List of Meeting Spots and Departure Times:

  • 7:45 AM - Parking Lot of baseline ES (Route 88 & Bayview)

  • 8:00AM - Amvets Parking Lot

  • 8:15 AM - Royal River Park Parking Lot

  • 8:30 AM - Arrive at YES

The Yarmouth Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee has provided the following tips and resources for biking and walking to school:

  • Go in groups. It's easier, safer, and more fun to ride or walk to school in a group.  As noted, you may consider organizing a regular  Bike Train with other families in your neighborhood.

  • Plan your routes. Stick to sidewalks, quiet streets, and pathways whenever possible, even if it adds a couple of extra minutes.

  • Be safe! If you are driving, always yield for children in the crosswalk, slow down, and give people on bikes plenty of space. The Bicycle Coalition of Maine has some great educational materials on bike safety basics. There are additional safety tips on the town's website here.

Thank you to Mr. Abbott for his continued leadership of our annual Bike to School days!

Yarmouth Bike Survey for Parents

The Yarmouth Bike and Pedestrian Committee is developing a School Active Transportation Plan to provide safer walking and cycling conditions for our students.  We are looking to gather as much feedback as possible to gain a clear view of the improvements needed in order to make our community safe for active transportation.  This confidential survey should take no longer than 10 minutes.

Note:  If you have multiple children, it is beneficial if you fill out one per child, especially if they attend different schools.  However, combining them into one response still provides us with very helpful data.

Active Transportation Survey

Thank you so much for your help with this!  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Yarmouth Wellness Committee

The Yarmouth Wellness Committee encourages families to be mindful of the impact sugary drinks can have on young people’s health. As highlighted in the infographic, many of the drinks shown are very high in sugar. Sugary beverages can contribute to a range of concerns, including increased risk of cavities, weight gain, and long-term health issues. Choosing water or other low-sugar options can help support students’ energy, focus, and overall well-being — both now and in the future.

Spring Transition - Step Up Day in June

On Thursday, June 12, we will hold our annual “Step Up Day” for all grades. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet their teacher, learn who will be in their class next year, and hopefully help with any anxiety that students may have about moving onward and upward. More details will follow in our June end-of-year newsletter. The last day of school is a half day on Friday, June 13.

If you are moving or anticipate that your child will not be attending YES next year, please reach out to us in the main office to help with our planning for student placement.

Of course, we have not listed all the other wonderful classroom-based events occurring this spring! Your child's teachers will be communicating all of that with you.

Retirement & Hiring News/5th Grade 2025-26

As we shared in April, after many distinguished years at YES, we have four staff members who will be retiring at the end of this school year.

Rich Smith, Grade 5 Teacher, Gina Rollins, Grade 5 Teacher, Meg Pachuta, PE Teacher, and Nancy Jones, Speech Teacher, will be retiring in June. Additionally, Renee Rhoads, Grade 4 Teacher, will be taking a one-year leave of absence and returning in 2026-27.

Again, it is always bittersweet to see such skilled, dedicated, and caring people like this retire. We are happy for them, but they will be greatly missed at YES. We wish them the best of luck as they move on to new adventures in their lives and appreciate all that they have done for the students and staff at YES.

To fill these positions, we do have some staff members who will be shifting over to new roles next year:

  • Karin Ney, a third-grade teacher at YES for many years, will be our new Physical Education teacher.

  • Katie Pride, a current fourth-grade teacher, will be shifting to third grade.

  • Breanna Bullard, a fifth-grade teacher this year, will be returning to the fourth-grade teaching team.

The remaining positions to fill are two fifth-grade teachers and a one-year-only fourth-grade teacher. We are in the midst of hiring for these positions and look forward to updating you on our new additions in the June newsletter.

We also want to share an update regarding the structure of our fifth-grade classes for the 2025–26 school year. Due to a smaller student enrollment in this grade, we will have five fifth-grade teachers next year.

  • Mrs. Greely and Mrs. Conley will each partner with one of our two new teachers to form two instructional teams, where students will rotate between classrooms for different subjects.

  • Mrs. Smith will have a self-contained classroom, where students will remain with her throughout the day and receive instruction in all core subjects.

In total, there will be:

  • Four classrooms following a team-teaching model with subject-area rotations

  • One classroom with a single teacher providing all core instruction

Looking ahead, we anticipate returning to our traditional model of six fifth-grade teachers and three teams for the 2026–27 school year based on that projected class size.

As always, student placement is a thoughtful and careful process that considers many factors to support the success of each child. We appreciate your understanding that we are not able to accommodate requests for either the team-teaching or self-contained model for fifth grade next year.

Thank you for your continued support!
